On June 20th in Burgas, Bulgaria, freedivers competed in\u00a0Dynamic with Bifins (DYNB)\u00a0<\/strong>at the\u00a028th AIDA World Championship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For the 28th World Championship, organizers chose a modern and recently-built pool,\u00a0the Park Arena OZK<\/strong>, which was constructed in 2019. This pool provides the most favorable conditions for athletes with its\u00a0spaciousness\u00a0<\/strong>(10 lanes that are 50m\/164ft in length) and warm, but not hot,\u00a0water temperature (26\u00b0C\/79\u00b0F)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Therefore, athletes are able to perform at consistently high levels, setting\u00a0new personal bests (PBs)\u00a0<\/strong>and national records.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the day,\u00a0Petar Klovar<\/strong>\u00a0of Croatia performed a very strong and clean\u00a0251m (823ft) dive<\/strong>, setting the bar very high for a gold medal. Petar\u2019s dive remained the top performance of the day until the last two heats, where his teammate\u00a0David \u010custi\u0107<\/strong>\u00a0and French athlete\u00a0Guillaume Bourdila\u00a0<\/strong>later took the stage. David had not participated in official competitions as of late due to his suspension for doping; therefore, no one knew for sure what shape the athlete would be in now. But he appeared to be as strong as ever, confidently performing a\u00a0265m (869ft) dive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Guillaume Bourdila<\/strong>, a very experienced athlete, performed the same dive. In the absence of the current AIDA World Record holder in DYNB,\u00a0Mateusz Malina<\/strong>\u00a0(290m\/951ft), Guillaume was the main favorite for the gold medal. In theory, David and Guillaume could have shared first place, but not this time.<\/p>\n

After several rounds of protests and reviews of the dive footage,\u00a0David \u010custi\u0107\u00a0<\/strong>was given a red card and\u00a0disqualified\u00a0<\/strong>for performing the surface protocol in the wrong order. Guillaume\u2019s white card performance was also put into question and his title of AIDA World Champion has been rescinded due to a yellow card given for his turns. On each of his turns, Guillaume placed his hand on the bottom of the pool and not on the pool wall, which resulted in a 5-point deduction for each turn, totaling -20 points in penalties. Therefore, the male DYNB pedestal turned out to be very unexpected.\u00a0Petar Klovar<\/strong>\u00a0became\u00a0AIDA World Champion\u00a0<\/strong>in DYNB for his performance of\u00a0250m (820ft)\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Yueh Shiang Hsu\u00a0<\/strong>of Chinese Taipei as Vice-Champion. Yueh Shiang Hsu performed a solid dive of\u00a0240m (787ft)<\/strong>\u00a0and also set a new AIDA National Record in DYNB. The bronze medal eventually went to Polish athlete\u00a0Karol Karcz<\/strong>\u00a0with his performance of\u00a0210m (689ft)<\/strong>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

Among the women, the winner was easily predicted in advance.\u00a0Magdalena Solich-Talanda\u00a0<\/strong>of Poland is already the current AIDA World Record holder with a previous performance of\u00a0243m (797ft)<\/strong>. She easily won the gold medal with her performance of\u00a0236m (774ft)<\/strong>, making her an\u00a0AIDA World Champion<\/strong>. Congratulations, Magdalena!<\/p>\n

However, there was an intrigue surrounding who would claim the silver and bronze medals. Several athletes had very close results, however, we are happy to see\u00a0Kateryna Sadurska<\/strong>\u00a0from Ukraine become the AIDA Vice-Champion in DYNB! Despite all of the difficulties and war in her country, Kateryna not only managed to prepare for the Championship in Dahab, Egypt, but also managed to perform at such a high level. Kateryna is an experienced athlete- she came into freediving in 2017 from a background of synchronized swimming and even participated in the Olympic games. This is her first medal from a world championship event. Congratulations, Kateryna, on your\u00a0well-deserved silver medal<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Yasuko Ozeki<\/strong>\u00a0– the AIDA National Record holder in DYNB of Japan – received a red card for her performance of\u00a0209m\/686ft<\/strong>\u00a0(the athlete did not successfully perform surface protocol), the\u00a0bronze medal<\/strong>\u00a0went to\u00a0Lidija Liji\u0107<\/strong>\u00a0of Croatia. Lidia has been a competitive athlete for about 17 years and has been participating in AIDA competitions since 2005, attending her first AIDA World Championship in 2007. During this time, Lidia managed to set 5 world records and still continues to improve her PBs and win medals! Congratulations, Lidia!<\/p>\n

We named only the winners, but in total today,\u00a098 freedivers\u00a0<\/strong>made the attempt to swim as far as possible in one breath with bifins. We hope all of the athletes, safeties, and judges had plenty of rest and recovery time after the first competition day. Today, we celebrate the great Polish athlete\u00a0Julia Kozerska<\/strong>. At the very beginning of the second competition day in the\u00a028th AIDA World Championship<\/strong>, Julia set a\u00a0new AIDA World Record*<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Dynamic Without Fins<\/strong>\u00a0by performing a very beautiful dive of\u00a0209m (686ft)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Less than 2 months ago, Julia set her first world record in DNF of 202m (663ft) at the AIDA Polish Freediving Pool Championships. However, that record didn’t last long – on the same day in the same competition, another Polish athlete,\u00a0Magdalena Solich-Talanda<\/strong>, set the bar higher in DNF by performing a 207m (679ft) dive.<\/p>\n

Now, the world record belongs to Julia again. We believe that her record should last for a while this time since, during this championship event, Magdalena performed a 180m (591ft) dive and is content and happy with her silver medal in DNF.<\/p>\n

Julia has been training freediving since 2011. In the 2016 and 2018 AIDA Championships, she won bronze and silver medals. And today, on June 21st, 2022, Julia became\u00a0AIDA World Champion<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0World Record holder in DNF<\/strong>\u00a0at the same time, which is a first for her. Magdalena Solich-Talanda<\/strong>\u00a0made a strong dive of 180m which secured her the silver medal. Just 9 meters behind her was\u00a0Kateryna Sadurska<\/strong>\u00a0from Ukraine who won the bronze medal with 171 meters. Women totally had a blast this competition!<\/p>\n

Guillaume Bourdila<\/strong>\u00a0made up for the lost points in DYNB discipline yesterday, winning the gold medal in DNF with\u00a0193 meters<\/strong>. Right behind him are again 2 Polish athletes \u2013\u00a0Karol Karzc (185 m)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Bochenek (159 m)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s wish all the athletes to have a good rest on Wednesday and we\u2019ll meet them on Thursday for Competition Day 3 with\u00a0static apnea!<\/strong><\/p>\n

On day 3 of the\u00a028th AIDA world competition<\/strong>, the athletes were fighting to be the best at the only pure freediving discipline which is measured not by distance, but by time \u2013\u00a0static apnea (STA)<\/strong>. There were not many unexpected results.<\/p>\n

The main fight amongst women was between the French athlete\u00a0Sylvie Gilson\u00a0<\/strong>and the Polish athlete\u00a0Julia Kozerska<\/strong>. Julia made a\u00a0World Record*\u00a0<\/strong>in DNF just 2 days ago so we don\u2019t know if she was really recovered. The difference between the two athletes was only 8 seconds but this time\u00a0Sylvie Gilson<\/strong>\u00a0was stronger (7:49 min) which rightfully provided her with the gold medal for the discipline. Julia took the silver medal with 7:41 minutes. The 3rd place went to\u00a0Agnieszka Kalska<\/strong>\u00a0from Poland with a great result of 7:14 minutes. Everybody was expecting to see what the multiple record holder\u00a0Magdalena Solich-Talanda<\/strong>\u00a0would do, but she chose not to start in the discipline.<\/p>\n

Among the men, the competition went a bit more surprising. Everybody was expecting a fearless fight between the main favorites\u00a0Rami Bladlav<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Valdemar Karlsson<\/strong>, both from Sweden. But Rami, who has an amazing static apnea result of 9:39 min, apparently was having a bad day, so his main competitor Valdemar had no problem of taking the gold medal with\u00a08:58 minutes<\/strong>.\u00a0Laurent De Beaucaron<\/strong>, a French athlete who had shown results over 9 minutes, achieved 8:41 minutes, which secured him the second place.\u00a0William Joy<\/strong>\u00a0also found his way on the podium with a very good result of 8:37 minutes.<\/p>\n

On June 24th, 2022, at the\u00a028th AIDA World Championship<\/strong>, French athlete\u00a0Guillaume Bourdila<\/strong>\u00a0set a new AIDA World Record in DYN (Dynamic apnea with fins) freediving discipline. He made an exceptional performance of\u00a0301 meters<\/strong>\u00a0which made him the new world champion and record holder! The previous AIDA World Record in DYN was set by\u00a0Mateusz Malina<\/strong>\u00a0of Poland and\u00a0Giorgos Panagiotakis<\/strong>\u00a0of Greece (300m\/984ft) in 2016 and remained unbreakable for six years. The fight for the 2nd and the 3rd place in men division was fierce – with only 1 meter between the results of the athletes, the silver medal went to\u00a0Yueh Shiang Hsu<\/strong>\u00a0from Chinese Taipei and the bronze went to\u00a0David Custic<\/strong>\u00a0from Croatia.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

The last competition day ended with a ceremony for all the winners in the 4 disciplines.\u00a0Natalia Molchanova Awards<\/strong>\u00a0were given to the overall winner for men\u00a0Karol Karcz<\/strong>\u00a0and for the overall winner for women\u00a0Magdalena Solich-Talanda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
