The CMAS World Freediving Pool Championships held in Athens, Greece, from May 18 to 25, 2025, witnessed an unprecedented feat, and in the spotlight was Poland’s Mateusz Malina, who has redefined the limits of human underwater endurance. With a series of astonishing world records in the dynamic freediving disciplines, Malina not only won gold, but also cemented his place as one of the most dominant figures in the history of the sport.

The Athens Olympic Aquatics Centre was the stage where the 38-year-old Malina demonstrated his mastery of horizontal freediving, achieving three new world records that have left the international community speechless.

DYNAMIC WITHOUT FINS: 239 meters

On Tuesday, May 20, Malina set a new CMAS world record in Dynamic Freediving without Fins (DNF), covering a distance of 239 meters. This new record surpassed last year’s mark by 1.5 meters, although Malina still holds the 2022 absolute world record for the 250 meters in this same discipline, held by the International Association for the Development of Apnea (AIDA). His dominance in DNF dates back to 2014, when he reached 226 meters and became the absolute world record holder.
