Vertical Blue and Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island, Bahamas have long been recognized as the pinnacles of freediving – where giants of the sport contend to be the champion of champions. At Vertical Blue 2023 by Garmin we expect nothing short of a spectacular 15th anniversary where 40 athletes from 20 different countries will attempt personal bests, national records and world records alike. This elite depth-competition is the premier sporting event of the year for the world’s most talented competitive freedivers – the “Wimbledon of Freediving”, as dubbed by the NY Times. And with the deepest, self-propelled divers ever in history, going head-to-head this epic event promises an unforgettable experience that will leave us all breathless.
Joining Vertical Blue for this year’s highly anticipated event (which runs from July 20 through July 30th,) is international wearable brand Garmin. Garmin is well-suited to be the primary sponsor of the event, creating well-engineered products, like the Descent dive computer, which will be the official gauge worn by all of the athletes during their official performances. Comprised of four depth disciplines: Constant Weight, Constant No-Fins, Free Immersion and constant weight Bi-Fins (CWT, CNF, FIM, CWTB respectively) this AIDA judged competition offers competitors six official dives to challenge themselves to obtain the coveted Vertical Blue Championship title. Spectators will have the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the intensity and focus of these athletes as they gracefully move through the depths, challenging the limits of their own physical and mental capabilities. Performances will be filmed on the surface and at depth to offer a first-hand perspective on how deep these dives really are, amazingly all on breath-hold.
